Puppy Safety: When to Avoid Dog Parks

We know dog parks sound fun, but for young puppies, it is best to wait.

Do NOT take your puppy to a dog park until 2 weeks after their vaccinations are complete.

Young puppies are still building their immune system. Dog parks can carry germs that may make your puppy very sick. Waiting until 2 weeks after their last shots will give their body time to build up some immunity.

This includes illnesses like:

  • Parvovirus (very dangerous for puppies)
  • Canine Distemper

When Is It Safe?

Most puppies can safely visit dog parks 2 weeks after they have had all of their puppy shots, usually around 12 – 16 weeks old.

Always check with your vet first to be sure your puppy is ready.

Safe Alternatives for Young Puppies

Until your puppy is fully vaccinated, try these safer options:

  • Walk your puppy in clean, low traffic areas
  • Let them play in your yard
  • Visit friends or family with healthy, vaccinated dogs
  • Carry your puppy in public places for socialization
