A Mini Goldendoodle is a cross between a Miniature Poodle and a Golden Retriever. The goal of the pairing is to create a small, loving, intelligent companion that fits well into many different kinds of homes.
Families often choose Mini Goldendoodles because they are:
Friendly with children and other pets
Highly trainable and eager to please
Great size for apartments or small homes
Playful without being overwhelming
Known for their goofy, loving personalities
As a breeder, I get to see firsthand how wonderfully well-rounded this breed truly is.
Size is one of the biggest questions future puppy owners ask, and it’s an important one! Being that the Golden Retriever is a bigger dog than the Miniature Poodle, sometimes we get a puppy that grows bigger than expected. The more backcrosses to the Miniature Poodle we get, though, the more predictable the size of the puppies get.
Small Mini (Petite): 8–14 lbs
Traditional Mini: 15–30 lbs
Large Mini / Small Medium: 31–40 lbs
Every breeder’s program is slightly different, and the range of what the sizes fall into varies by breeder, so make sure you ask! I encourage families to ask about the specific parents involved. In my experience, genetics play a major role, so knowing the sizes of the dam and sire gives you the best estimate of what the possibility of the puppies grown weight will be. Most of our puppies are estimated to be between 15 – 30 pounds and stand 14 – 15 inches tall at the top of the shoulders when full grown.
Mini Goldendoodles are known for their sweet, people loving personality. My puppies are raised in our home with other dogs, so they grow up confident and social.
Most Mini Goldendoodles are:
Social and loving
Smart and learns quickly
Patient, gentle, and tolerant
Playful but not usually hyper
Deeply bonded to their families
Many of my puppy families tell me their dogs are “little shadows”, and they love to be part of whatever you’re doing!
Coat type varies from dog to dog, and this isn’t an easy question to answer. Some Mini Goldendoodles shed, but much more lightly than their ancestor the Golden Retriever, while others shed not at all. It really depends on the generation and if they took after the Poodle more or not. I typically tell people that the curlier their coats are the less they’ll shed.
Generations can be confusing, so I break them down for families in simple terms. Below is a quick overview. To get a more in depth understanding, check out our page on Mini Goldendoodle Generations.
F1 – 50% Golden Retriever, 50% Mini Poodle
F1b – 75% Poodle, 25% Golden Retriever
F1bb – 87.5% Poodle × F1b Goldendoodle
Multigen – Any generation past F3 or F1bb bred Goldendoodle-to-Goldendoodle or Goldendoodle to Poodle
Generations often influence things like coat style, shedding, and predictability, so I always look at which generation works best for each family’s needs.
Yes. Mini Goldendoodles are usually wonderful with children. In my breeding program, the puppies are raised in a family environment, which helps them grow up confident, gentle, and socialable.
Soft, patient personalities
Natural love of play
Easy to train
Gentle movers, even when excited
Great at adjusting to busy family life
I spend a lot of time doing ENS, ESI, and sound desensitization to help make our puppies well rounded where they will adapt to many types of environments.
Mini Goldendoodles are playful but not usually real high energy. They fit well into active homes as well as quieter households. They tend to adapt to their families needs.
Most Mini Goldendoodles do well with:
20–40 minutes of daily activity
A couple of walks or short play sessions
Mental enrichment like treat puzzles or training games
Puppies especially will need more playtime in short sessions each day with time between to rest. Having several toys, bones, and puzzles for them will keep them entertained.
Mini Goldendoodle coats can vary greatly depending on genetics, but I see three main types:
Soft, loose waves. Usually the easiest to maintain.
Tighter curls similar to a Poodle. Typically lower to non shedding.
Looks more like a Golden Retriever. Often shed more and require less grooming.
We breed mostly for a curly or wavy coat that is soft to the touch. All of our dogs have soft coats. The more Poodle in the puppies genetics usually means they’ll have a curlier coat.
Because they have hair instead of fur, Mini Goldendoodles benefit from regular grooming. Each puppies coat will grow at a different rate and it will also depend on how long or short you keep their coat. Shorter clips will need brushed much less often, if at all, while a long coat will need brushed at least once a day.
Brushing: 2 – 4 times per week
Professional grooming: Every 6 – 8 weeks
Face/eye cleanups: Weekly
Ear cleanings: Weekly – Bi Weekly
Good grooming habits help keep your Mini Goldendoodle healthy, feeling good and looking adorable.
Nutrition plays a huge role in your puppy’s development. I always recommend a high quality food that supports growth and joint health. We feed Purina Pro Plan, Performance 30/20, Salmon and Rice. Some Goldendoodles are allergic to chicken, so we stay away from any food or treats that have chicken in them, just to be safe.
Choose a food with meat as the first ingredient.
Avoid overly processed brands.
Keep your puppy on a consistent feeding routine.
Don’t switch foods without a transition period.
Feeding a high quality food is important for your puppy. It will have a lasting impact on them throughout their lives.
Absolutely! They are one of the easiest small breeds to train because they inherit intelligence from the Poodle and eagerness to please from the Golden Retriever.
Use positive reinforcement
Keep sessions short and fun
Start early with socialization
Pair commands with hand signals
Be consistent with cues
My puppies start socialization and potty training before going to their new homes.
Like all breeds, Mini Goldendoodles can be prone to certain health conditions. Responsible breeders test their parent dogs to reduce risks to the puppies. Our dogs are genetically health tested and the puppies come with a lifetime genetic health guarantee.
Heart and joint conditions
Genetic eye diseases
Patellar issues
Breed specific genetic markers
I am happy to provide the health test results on our parent dogs. We do not inbreed our dogs to help limit the chances of genetic issues.
Mini Goldendoodles usually live 12–16 years, depending on size, genetics, diet, and lifestyle. Many people have goldendoodles continue to be active, happy, and youthful even into their senior years.
